For most of us, hair is everything. And as the weather grows colder, it becomes increasingly hard to take care of our hair. No matter who you are or what your hair type is—we all know how annoying frizzy, dry, or damaged hair is. For most of us, hair masks have been a way to solve even our most stubborn hair problems—but have you ever wondered if you’re using them to their full potential? With all the unsolicited hair advice we hear on social media, it can be overwhelming to navigate so many new hacks and methods. But thankfully, professional hairstylists are here to set the record straight on the proper way to use a hair mask.
Using a hair mask seems super straightforward, but there are actually tons of reasons why you might not be getting the results you want. The fact of the matter is, most of us aren’t exactly scientific in our hair methods—but that doesn’t mean you can’t implement salon-approved techniques at home. In fact, solving your hair problems is more possible than you think, especially when you take advice from the pros.
Why Use a Hair Mask?
Contrary to common belief, hair masks aren’t only for dry hair. Jennifer Matos, Hairstylist at Rita Hazan Salon, says that hair masks can benefit everyone. “Using a hair mask is a great way to maintain healthy hair strands. It leaves the cuticles hydrated and deeply moisturizes. Even if you have more oily prone hair, it can help to restore optimal hair health.” In addition to hydration, hair masks are designed to nourish and repair even the most damaged hair. So whether your hair is recovering from a bleaching session, it’s feeling extra dry, or you’re looking to refresh your scalp—a hair mask might be a good option.
How to Use a Hair Mask
Unfortunately, just slapping on a hair mask isn’t enough to reap the benefits. Before you even apply the mask, Matos says to make sure your hair is fully cleansed. “It’s vital to cleanse the hair properly before you apply a hair mask, without this step your hair can feel oily or greasy,” she says. Afterwards, it’s just as important to thoroughly rinse the product out in order to avoid potential damage. Moisturizing your hair is always good, but leaving on the product for too long can lead to excessive greasiness.
Celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos recommends carefully reading the hair mask’s instructions, especially when it comes to timing. He cautions that leaving on the product for extra time doesn’t always mean better results, and in some cases it can lead to weighed down hair. “Each mask has its own purpose, so adhere to the suggested application time for the best results,” he says. Additionally, be sure to only use the recommended amount—because the last thing you want is to unknowingly waste product.
Additionally, using hair masks too often is another reason your hair might feel greasy. But, if you’re hair is in desperate need of hydration, you should consider adding hair masks to your usual routine. “If you feel your hair is very damaged or dry, you may want to consider a hair mask twice a week,” Giannetos says. On the other hand, Matos says that heavier formulated masks should only be used around two to three times a month. When in doubt, listen to your hair and its needs rather than just applying product unnecessarily.
