This year, we’ve seen tons of past trends resurrect and pick up serious steam on TikTok. From ’90s brows to smudged indie sleaze eyeliner, it’s safe to say Gen Z is obsessed with beauty looks of the past. And just recently, a brand new trend emerged on TikTok where users began recreating iconic makeup looks from the year they were born. Even though seeing people recreate makeup from 2008 is making me feel super ancient, I couldn’t be more on board with paying homage to past decades of makeup. And thankfully for all the 2000s babies, there’s no shortage of Y2K makeup trends to draw inspo from.
Everyone knows that Gen Z has a thing for nostalgia—even if that means romanticizing a time before they were born. And it seems like lately everyone on TikTok has been especially infatuated with makeup from the ’90s and 2000s, so this birth year makeup trend makes total sense. Past beauty icons like Christina Aguilera and Drew Barrymore have supplied us with some incredible looks over the years, and they’re seriously inspiring us to break free from the shackles of clean girl makeup. Plus, with how fast beauty trends are cycling in and out—even a full face of trends from 20 years ago can look super current.
So in honor of the Y2K renaissance, I put together some inspo of all the best nostalgic beauty trends of the last 30 years. Whether you’re a Gen Z’er wanting to try out the TikTok trend or just looking to update your usual makeup routine—take note of these iconic beauty looks.

’90s Grunge

The ’90s were the era of skinny brows, cool-toned shadow, and bold lips—so those are the trends we’re drawing inspiration from. (Think, Gabbriette’s signature look.) And while most of those trends have already made their way back on to our TikTok For You Pages, nothing screams “cool girl” like committing to the bit and going full ’90s with your makeup.

Image Credit: by Gregg DeGuire/Getty Images. If you’re a youngster born in the 2010s, bronzed glam will be your nostalgic makeup look of choice. Stars like Selena Gomez were known to rock 2010s makeup trends with ease—calling on nude lips, smokey eyes, and thick eyeliner to stun on red carpets. There’s an effortless beauty that 2010s makeup radiates, and although it might be a little too soon for most of us to dust off our Naked palettes—all the young Gen Z’ers will soon be recreating makeup from this era too.
