Well, we’ve done it. We’ve scoured the fashion weeks and all their street styles, we’ve scoped out the scene downtown, and we’re here to give you our official 2025 sneaker trend report.
At first, a sneaker gives off the impression that it’s unfussy and low maintenance, that a “jeans and sneakers” outfit is a chill thing you didn’t really think too hard about. And while that’s all often very true, it’s misleading. The truth is, putting some thought into choosing a basic like a sneaker is the reason it gets to be this low maintenance, effortless thing while still casually cool.
Fashion week street style is a great place to study up and coming trends because that’s where fashion’s earliest trend adopters and most ambitious experimenters are testing out their sartorial ideas. This past fall and summer, there have been very clear threads of what people are wearing, almost to the point that I’m concerned. Half kidding, but seriously I do get a raised eyebrow when everyone’s so clearly and precisely on the exact same page. But maybe the ideas were just in the water or something.
Something I saw a ton of that I found really exciting was silver chrome sneakers. Not sure how long that shine will wear, but that may be a predictor for how long the trend lasts. In similar vein, there were quite a few people wearing leopard print sneakers, specifically the Adidas ones with the large hanging tongue. But there were also some more familiar ones too: a low profile runner and suede sneakers are here to stay. Velcro sneakers have already hit stores, from designers like Wales Bonner and Camper.

Low-Profile Sneakers
Image Credit: Getty Images. Sneakers are sneakers, so I’ll never say something is “over.” Chunky sneaks are still around, as are thicker soles. But the last two years, we’ve seen a total boom in low-profile sneakers. It started with Adidas Sambas. Who could forget? Harry Styles was wearing them. Everyone in SoHo was wearing them. The color ways, AH the color ways. But then we started to see variations. The Adidas Gazelle’s started popping off. Nike revived an old shoe design, the Astrograbber, in a collaboration with New York fashion designer Bode, and then Puma Speedcats were one of the most popular shoes of the summer in 2024. You can expect some longevity here.

Velcro
Image Credit: Getty Images. Velcro shoes are back from a long, cold war. I personally did not expect this, but after seeing so many cool people on the pages of Getty’s street style search, I simply knew the past had come back to the present. Velcro may not be a new technology, but it’s back in new (and surprising) ways in 2025.

Suede
Image Credit: Getty Images This one’s tricky for me because I’m personally deathly afraid of suede shoes. I don’t even know why because I love a worn in, beaten up pair of dirty shoes. My white MM6 boots have scuffs and folds where the leather got dirty. I love them even more. My sneakers never last a minute before they start to discolor. That’s who I am. But suede…now that’s too far. It’s illogical, and it’s time to interrogate my fears because suede sneakers are trending, everybody.

Animal Prints
Image Credit: Getty Images. I first really noticed the return of animal print in prep for Coachella this year, where it was very much back, and I was very much charmed. Leopard print pants, tops, underwear. You name it. So of course, welcome to the jungle: animal print sneakers. These could go one of two ways: iconic, like 2014 denim jackets, or cringe, like 2014 galaxy prints. No way to predict the future, all you can do is whatever you want at the moment.
Wales Bonner Mixed Leather Lace-Up Runner SneakersI had to gag. These shoes are gorgeous and the minute I saw them, I gasped. An approachable sneaker compared to the Wales Bonner pair. -
Silvers
Image Credit: Getty Images. Perhaps one of my favorite sneaker trends, although I’m not so sure how durable that silver finish will be on sneakers. I’m not a very careful shoe-wearer, so this is dangerous for me, but maybe that’s why I think it’s so cool and daring.

Big Tongues
Image Credit: Getty Images. Tongues are back for the first time since Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz era. Usually opposing trends coincide—minimalism and maximalism are always showing up to the same party, playing different tricks. The petite, low profile sneakers are in attendance, as are these loud, obnoxious ones with the tongue spilling out the top.
