The 10 Best YSL Fragrances, According to a Fragrance Expert & Beauty Editor

Finding a signature fragrance takes time, patience, and dedication—unless you opt for a YSL fragrance. During our cursory research, we noticed that all the YSL fragrances sold at Ulta or Sephora had at least 1,000 reviews and sometimes up to 5,000 reviews. What’s more impressive, still, is that these reviews didn’t average to anything lower than 4.6 stars. Perhaps this isn’t that surprising, though. After all, YSL—named after its founder, Yves Saint Laurent—is synonymous with youth, sensuality, and luxury. (See what we did there?)
From its best-selling Black Opium Eau De Parfum
, for which Zoë Kravitz is the face of, to its one-year-old unisex fragrance, Tuxedo, YSL fragrances have a variety of notes for everyone. Each fragrance features international ingredients like Moroccan orange blossom and comes in the most stunning packaging. Not only is the box ornate, but the bottles themselves are works of art. Some feature engraved YSL embellishments, while others come adorned with bows and a YSL name plate. But most importantly, they always smell amazing.

To take some of the work out of perfume shopping, we chatted with fragrance expert Dan Rothschild. He gave us insight into how to choose the best YSL fragrance for your body chemistry and some of the most popular YSL perfumes. Keep reading to learn his thoughts.
How to Choose the Best YSL Perfume for You
Rothschild says the only way to really know which YSL perfume is right for you is by trying it on. “And don’t just spray it on a strip and make a decision,” he advises. “The best thing to do is to spray it on the top of your hand or your forearm and keep going back to it over a few hours.” In other words, don’t make a decision at that moment. If you’re able to, take some time away from the scent and see how it smells once you’ve been out in the world.
That said, if you’re in a pinch, you might be able to tap people who work at your favorite fragrance shop. “The store assistants also tend to be quite knowledgeable, so don’t be afraid to ask them for their opinions,” suggests Rothschild. They’ll likely ask about your natural scent as well as the fragrances you’ve found already work for you. This way, they’re able to suggest something in alignment with that.
So, once you choose your new YSL fragrance, what can you expect from it? “They’re always super consistent. Very nicely packaged and sharply tailored bottles. The scents are generally very easy-going and mass-appealing,” says Rothschild. We found that the YSL fragrances we tested did, indeed, check all of these boxes.
What is the Most Popular YSL Perfume?
Black Opium Eau De Parfum is the fragrance with the most reviews, totalling 7,490 on Ulta at the time of this writing. Moreover, it averaged a whopping 4.7 stars—with some rave reviews calling this fragrance “exquisite,” “sexy,” and “memorable.”
As a bonafide fragrance buff, Rothschild also thought it was “worth nodding toward some of the heritage of the brand.” For instance, he continued, when the brand was under Tom Ford’s creative direction, YSL released the first mainstream perfume to feature oud as a key note. It was called M7. “A true classic,” says Rothschild.
Since that’s no longer widely available, Rothschild says the Vestiaire range is similarly innovative. “It has loads of super exciting and genuinely artistic perfumes for those looking for something a little off the beaten track [or something more niche].”
Fret not, because we included two of these fragrances in our roundup of the best YSL fragrances—below.
-
Black Opium Eau De Parfum
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Black Opium Eau De ParfumIf I had to describe YSL’s Black Opium Eau De Parfum in one word, I’d say “wow.” The base note of vanilla is strong enough to be detectable from a distance but not too overwhelming for my liking. Though the top note is coffee, the floral and vanilla scents offer a nice balance to the smoky notes that exude femininity. As you’ll always get with YSL, the packaging of Black Opium is top-tier. Its black glittery exterior, accentuated with a keyhole that allows you to see the pink hue of this fragrance, makes you feel (and smell!) like you’re that girl.Key notes: Coffee, vanilla, white flowerFragrance family: Warm and spicy, sweet gourmandBottle sizes: 0.33 oz., 1 oz., 1.6 oz., 3 oz., 5 oz.Pros
- Long-lasting
- Beautiful packaging
- Sensually feminine scent
Cons
- May be too sweet for some olfactory senses
-
Mon Paris Eau de Parfum
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Mon Paris Eau de ParfumOn Sale 10% offMon Paris Eau de Parfum smells like the most expensive bouquet of flowers there ever was—which makes sense, considering that it’s one of YSL’s best-selling floral fragrances. The top note here is red berries, which means that’s the first scent people get when they’re near you. After that, you’ll spot patchouli—which helps bring a down-to-earth air to the fragrance. The base note, which is what you smell last, is white musk. This clean, powdery scent packs the feminine punch that you’d want out of a floral perfume.Key notes: Datura flower, patchouli, red berries
Fragrance family: Floral
Bottle sizes: 0.33 oz., 1 oz., 1.6 oz., 3 oz., 5 oz.Pros
- Fresh scent that lasts all day
- Beautiful bottle that doubles as decor
- Sophisticated scent that’s easily layered
Cons
- May not work with all body chemistries
-
Libre Eau De Parfum Intense
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Libre Eau De Parfum IntenseOn Sale 23% offLike Black Opium, this is another YSL fragrance that has a warm vanilla base. In Spanish, Libre means free—and that is kind of how you feel when you wear this fragrance. Before noses detect the vanilla base notes, they’ll relish in the lavender essence top notes and the orange blossom middle notes. I wore this when I went out with my girlfriends and got tons of compliments from them as well as would-be suitors.Key notes: Datura flower, patchouli, red berries
Fragrance family: Warm floral
Bottle sizes: 1 oz., 3 oz.Pros
- Long-lasting scent
- Bottle is beautifully designed
- Has thousands of positive reviews
Cons
- Only available in two sizes
-
Tuxedo – Le Vestiaire Des Parfums
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Tuxedo – Le Vestiaire Des ParfumsThough this fragrance is just in a classic, square glass bottle, it’s the epitome of luxury. The black-and-white box in which its originally housed is so lavish and elegant. This elegance transcends the bottle, with the unisex fragrance encapsulating the olfactory sense. We picked this as the best unisex scent because the notes are genderless—including the violet leaf, bergamot, rose, and black pepper. It also helps that the bottle isn’t too masculine or feminine. Rothschild notes that you shouldn’t be fooled by this fragrance’s moniker. “Tuxedo is a great all-arounder. Despite the name, it’s not just a black tie fragrance. It’s pretty office-safe—although best for a date night, I’d say.”Key notes: Violet leaf, coriander, bergamot, rose, black pepper, lily-of-the-valley
Fragrance family: Chypre
Bottle sizes: 4.2 oz.Pros
- Balanced fragrance
- Bottle has a magnetic top
- Packaging feels and looks luxurious
Cons
- Price tag is high
- Only comes in one size
-
Myslf Eau De Parfum
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Myslf Eau De ParfumAccording to a YSL rep, this is one of the brand’s most popular men’s fragrances. And Rothschild is inclined to agree. “This is a daytime easy driver. You’ll smell fresh and clean, and you’ll not offend anyone.” That tracks, considering that the base note is a woody scent. Top and middle notes are fresh accord and orange blossom, respectively—which help give this cologne a clean feel. I tried some on myself and found that it was too masculine for my liking. So I gifted it to my uncle (read: told him he could keep it if he gave me a review) and he said that he liked wearing this on his park dates with his long-term boyfriend because it’s clean yet musky.Key notes: Fresh accord, orange blossom, woods heart
Fragrance family: Woody
Bottle sizes: 0.33 oz., 1.4 oz., 2 oz., 3.3 oz., 5 oz.Pros
- Refillable
- Long-lasting
- Floral yet earthy and clean
Cons
- Some may not like the floral notes
-
Y Eau De Parfum
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Y Eau De ParfumOn Sale 29% offRothschild says that YSL’s Y men’s range is likely the brand’s most popular. “They’re easy to like and well-priced.” This is also another great daytime fragrance, the expert adds. With top notes of apple, middle notes of sage, and base notes of vetiver, this fragrance leans strongly masculine. So much so, in fact, that Lenny Kravitz is the face of this woody cologne. As always, the fragrance bottle is sophisticated and luxurious. It features an Yves Saint Laurent logo on the front, which wraps around the square bottle to reveal a built-in Y to signify the fragrance.Key notes: Apple, sage, vetiver
Fragrance family: Woody
Bottle sizes: 0.33 oz., 2 oz., 3.3 oz., 5 oz., 6.7 oz.Pros
- Sophisticated bottle
- Great everyday fragrance
- Sure to get you compliments
Cons
- Some reviewers say this isn’t long-lasting
-
Lavallière – Le Vestiaire Des Parfums
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Lavallière – Le Vestiaire Des ParfumsWhen I took this fragrance out for a spin, I couldn’t stop getting compliments. Everytime I hugged someone to greet them or say goodbye, I’d hear, “Oh, you smell good. What is that?” It was YSL’s Lavallière. Similar to the Tuxedo fragrance, this is meant to be unisex. It features notes of fig, blackcurrant, bergamot, geranium, jasmine, vetiver, and Cashmeran musk. Essentially, this highly balanced and complex fragrance is wonderful for anyone on the gender spectrum.Key notes: Fig, rose, vetiver, Cashmeran musk
Fragrance family: Fruity floral
Bottle sizes: 2.5 oz., 4.2 oz.Pros
- Bottle has a magnetic top
- Packaging feels luxurious
- Great genderless fragrance
Cons
- Some reviewers say this isn’t long-lasting (we did not find this to be the case)
-
Libre Eau de Parfum
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Libre Eau de ParfumOn Sale 18% offYSL’s Libre line currently features six fragrances, and this perfume is the second level of intensity. With notes of orange blossom, lavender, vanilla, and musk accord, the scent is pleasant and low-key enough for the office. Don’t take that to mean you won’t receive compliments on the fragrance, though. It’s still strong enough for people to smell you if you’re less than three feet away. When I wore this, I felt like I could smell myself all day—and I smelled amazing.Key notes: Lavender essence, orange blossom, musk accord, vanilla
Fragrance family: Warm floral
Bottle sizes: 0.33 oz., 1 oz., 1.6 oz., 3 oz., 3.3 oz., 5 oz.Pros
- Long-lasting scent

Cons
- May be too sweet for some
-
Libre Flowers & Flames
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Libre Flowers & FlamesWhen I spritzed this on to go out with friends on a Saturday night, I felt captivating, sexy, and powerful. And, upon their arrival, my friends noticed my warm floral scent and asked me what I was wearing. This continued at the bar, where the bartender asked me which fragrance I used. Because of the notes here—which include lily flower, orange blossom, and coco palm tree flower accord—this perfume has an air of sensuality that makes it perfect for a date. It’s up to you whether that’s a platonic or romantic date.Key notes: Coco palm tree flower accord, lily flower accord, orange blossom, diva lavender heart
Fragrance family: Warm floral
Bottle sizes: 0.33 oz., 1 oz., 3 oz.Pros
- Long-lasting scent
- Beautifully ornate bottle
- Sensual enough for date night
Cons
- May be too sweet for some
-
Libre Absolu Platine
YSL / Natalie Arroyo Camacho Libre Absolu PlatineOn Sale 20% offWhen I first took this fragrance out of its box, my jaw dropped. Unlike the other Libre perfumes, this scent came in a metallic bottle that is so hypnotizing to look at. The silver and gold balance of the bottle is matched by an equilibrium of notes inside. For instance, a fresh white lavender and a sensual orange are beautifully balanced in this Absolu Platine, which is the highest concentration of any Libre scent. This is great for weddings because it’s fresh and “loud” enough to make you stand out at outdoor weddings. But it’s not so strong that you’ll take away from the people getting married.Key notes: Orange blossom, diva lavender, white lavender
Fragrance family: Warm floral
Bottle sizes: 0.33 oz., 1.6 oz., 3 oz.Pros
- Long-lasting scent
- Balanced fragrance
- Beautifully ornate bottle
Cons
- Metallic bottle is hard to see through
